On June 1, 2010, the Perth Mint released the 2010 Australian Koala Gold Proof Coins. A fresh interpretation of a young koala is depicted on the reverse of these 99.99% pure gold coins.
The Australian Gold Koala is offered in 2 oz, 1 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/25 oz sizes, with each size carrying a limited mintage. The 1 oz size coin is "high relief," struck on an extra thick blank to allow greater design depth. (The 1 oz and 2 oz coins are not available in the United States.)
The reverse design of each coin features an image of a young koala on a tree branch eating gum leaves. An inscription below the koala indicates the bullion weight and purity. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark also appears. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include "Elizabeth II", "Australia", "2010" and the legal tender face value.
The 2010 Koala Gold Proof coins are housed in a presentation case with a jarrah timber lid and custom designed shipper. Each coin is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Besides the current gold proof version of the coin, the Perth Mint previously released the 2010 Silver Koala in September 2009. The coins were available in sizes ranging from 1/2 oz to 1 kilo of .9999 silver. The 2010 Silver Koala Gilded Coin was released in February 2010. This version of the coin contains 1 oz of silver with the koala gilded in 24 karat gold.
